As a carrier of automobiles, we have hauled vehicles for ATS over the past few years. Sometimes these moves are of a C.O.D. nature, and we collect the freight charges at time of delivery. Many times, we don't, and then it is a situation whereby we bill ATS.
Over the years, ATS has consistently been slow in paying their bills. Slow, as in months and months. Continued calls to them meet with the "check's in the mail" story. They do eventually pay their debt, but it is not without much harassment. I can only assume that If we, the carrier, are treated this way, then somewhere along the line the retail end user (ultimately, the customer) will be mishandled also.
We would haul for them on a C.O.D. basis, but then, the collection would "change" after the shipment was in route, causing a billing situation to occur. Occasionally a customers car could be held until payment would occur, but that only causes more problems, mostly for the customer.
In short, ATS has not been a responsible business partner, and I say partner, because they don't have equipment, but act as a middleman, to align the shipper with a carrier that has equipment. I consider that to be a partnership of sorts, and in as much as the customer has paid ATS for the move, I think it reasonable to expect payment also, after actually doing the work, and incurring the lions share of expenses involved. Once again, it is my opinion that if ATS does not handle the payment of their debts quickly and professionally, I would think there would be other things amiss, that would most definitely affect the customer. I would be a cautious consumer, in choosing ATS.
