Never having used an auto transport company I was, I think, understandably nervous trying to decide whether to ship my car cross country without meeting the transport people in person at any step in the process. Also, doing some research, the first thing I discover is that the whole vehicle transport business is completely unregulated by any organization: federal, state or private. In this case my fears were unfounded. I used a quote service I found on line and received 8 quotes within hours. I decided to go with Best Auto Shippers because I liked the responses I received from Joseph in customer service. Keep in mind that the companies are all brokers who deal with multiple shippers so there are two steps between you and your auto. The whole process was pretty smooth - we had one hiccough when the driver Joseph selected was using the wrong phone number to set up the pick up and we thought we were going to be in real trouble (could have been a disaster since my son was leaving CA on Wed and we thought the car was being picked up on Monday - once he left we would have been out of luck). But, Joseph had a back up driver (he says he always has two transport drivers arranged in case there is an issue) and the car was picked up on Tuesday, just in time. The only other slight issue was the delivery estimate - I was told 5-7 days on the first driver, when we lost him I was told 7-10 days for delivery. The car was actually delivered on Christmas Eve, 11 days from pick up. In our case, we were not in dire need of the car so it didn't matter much. I think the key is to be flexible - in our case there was bad weather which added time to the delivery. Also, if you can meet the driver at the delivery point (in our case Phila.) you can save a day or so.
The best part about Best AutoShippers (mostly Joseph) was his quick response every time I called - when he wasn't around and it was the weekend, I'd say the help was a little less responsive. But a minor issue, again because we could be flexible.
