I’m Surprised I Ever Saw My Car Again

I got multiple offers to haul my car cross country. I didn’t want to hitch it to the back of the 25 ft RV. I got a call from Howard Brown from Ultimate Transport 123. He said that this was his son’s company, so he could vouch for their integrity, including the fact that they were the only ones in the industry that would give an up-front total. There was zero accountability and professionalism throughout my experience. I sincerely believed I would never see my car again. I made it clear that I needed the car picked up before I left and I needed to be in CT by the 15th to sign closing documents, which means that I needed to be parked in CT by the night of the 4th so as to be out of quarantine on the 15th, the day after the 10 day quarantine would be over. I was told it would be no issue to pick it up either on the 28th or 29th. On the 27th, I kept calling the company to say, hey, I need to know when you’re coming because I’m in the process of moving, I need to make arrangements for someone to be there when you’re coming if I’m off wrapping up my business. They didn’t even have a driver lined up. And Howard, who was supposed to help me throughout this whole process, suddenly became the guy who wanted me to be 100% clear that this was not his problem. Finally, the 30th came, I HAD to leave to make my deadline and Howard said, don’t worry, it will be fine, someone will come within the next day to pick up my car. Just leave the key out on the back tire. No one will know. This made me desperately uncomfortable but I had bigger fish to fry and not a lot of options considering my sister had already helped and was back in WA and my mother is no longer speaking to me. But it wasn’t picked up. So I called Howard again, who informed me in no uncertain terms that since it was the day before New Years, no, no one was picking up my car, it wasn’t his problem, and he had a life, too, you know. I had to talk him down and say, hey, I get it, but I’m in the middle of Nevada, and we have a contract. Figure it out. I had to ask my former neighbor if she would pick up the key and hold onto it until the day the driver arrived. And he still was a day and a half late. But it was finally picked up on January 7th, long after I arrived in Connecticut after driving an RV there. Finally, they secured a driver. Jeff Shaffer will tell you his life story without you asking. It’s a sad one and you will be asked to sympathize with him. He does have the worst luck in the world, his truck breaking down not once but twice on the way, or he’s merely a really overly-dramatic liar. Each call got increasingly bizarre, when he finally just started calling my brother with updates since it was his house I had to give as my drop-off address. He basically had a mental breakdown and my brother was convinced he was one hiccup away from abandoning his car and running off to Mexico with his wife. He even suggested that it would just be better if I came and got my car from him because it was just too much for him. And then, he finally arrives at my brother’s house late last night, and I get the message that he expects cash on delivery when I was told a credit card with a 4% charge would work just fine. So I have to Venmo this guy the rest of the contract amount. This was the most unprofessional experience of my life and I shouldn't have been charged a dime for the displeasure. So everyone should be aware. Never leave your car with Jeff Shaffer. Never trust Howard Brown. Never use Ultimate Transport 123.
