Late, Damaged, and a Dishonest Claims Process

The military recently moved me from Virginia to Washington. I decided to ship one of our two cars so that my wife and I would not have to drive both cars almost 3000 miles. The estimated shipment time for my truck was 14 days, but instead it took 29 days (over twice as long as the estimate). DAS never called to inform me that my truck had arrived. I had to find that out from the call-in locator service.

When I arrived at the terminal, the representative said, "You know it's damaged, right?" The rear window was shattered. The terminal had cleaned up the mess and told me that DAS is supposed to call and inform the customer of damage to the vehicle, which DAS never did.

When I filed the claim (for over $600 damage to replace the rear window), DAS offered only $150 because I had not purchased additional coverage. However, they do not offer that additional coverage when getting the quote online or reserving the shipment (even though they charge your credit card at that time). They do not inform you then that you have to purchase additional coverage. So you've now reserved your shipment, paid for it, and don't know that they offer limited liability. By the time you show up at the drop-off terminal, you're stuck with DAS.
