After calling several independent carriers referred by friends over several weeks, and often not getting a return call, having days go by before getting a quote, and/or little definite information about pick-up/timeline, etc, I called Specialty Mobile based on the reviews posted to this site. I have a penchant for the little-guy carrier, and so wanted to avoid using a broker, who I viewed as an unnecessary middleman. Wrong.
Specialty Mobile took my call, quoted a price ($695), scheduled a truck, sent a confirmation/order form, which I completed and returned via email, and gave me the name and contact information for the driver. The entire process took 20 minutes. My car was picked up in Ft. Myers, FL two days later by a courteous, prompt driver, and delivered by same 3 days from pick-up at my door. Car was in perfect condition and in my garage in 10 minutes.
I will most definitely use Specialty Mobile in the future for all classic car hauling, and highly recommend that anyone considering directly contacting independents ditch the idea and call this company. They save a lot of frustration, quoted the same price as the independents I talked to, and provide documentation that their subcontractors have current insurance and appropriate licensure (on this last point, my attempts to get current insurance certs from independent carriers, which was a prerequiste for me, were generally met with bland indifference or oral assurances like "don't worry---we're insured," which is obviously insufficient).
