After selling my car to a friend near Chicago, the challenge became getting it there from Delaware. Having shipped a classic car before I was semi familiar with the process and knew it would be easiest, especially for the price.
The problem was I decided to go with companies who quoted the lowest yet also SEEMED to have the most glowing reviews here, in the top 10 or so. First was Agape who has some of the highest numbers. Called and was pleased with how nice and contracted that Monday. "We'll call you as soon as we have a carrier." Week went on, and on, and on. After more than a week had passed, that was enough of that despite the low price and niceness. That low price just couldn't get ANY truck to Delaware, apparently the forgotten land in shipping. Still not fully clued in I then went with 4 Corners. Just as pleasant staff but also seemingly much more responsive. They seemed like they could get someone and do it more quickly, but after 4 days, nada.
Both the buyer and myself were getting antzy and in the meantime he researched and found out about Specialty Mobile Systems which I had somehow overlooked. About $125 more than the others, but those others were also too low--as we found out--to ever get a truck to sign on. What a god send! Don was the most happy and knowledgeable guy to talk to early in the morning and we chatted like friends. He passed me on to Dee who handled the deposit and such and she was even more entertaining. I KNEW that these guys were the one, from that second. I explained what bind we had been stuck in with other brokers who could get NO ONE to Delaware.
Their answer? "Oh, that's actually a common route for us." Promised the approximate 7 day max wait window, but also assured me it would likely be much quicker. Great. It was only a few HOURS and their dispatch team had a truck, called me, and all was set. REALLY? In what 2 brokers (Agape & 4 Corners) couldn't do in 2 weeks, SMS did in hours.
The driver was at my driveway immediately the next day and in a crew cab dually truck with a 3 car hauler, which was a surprise bonus for me--less cars, less stops, and more care along the way. He was fantastic as well, and got the car to Chicago in less than 24 hours and in flawless shape.
If ONLY I had just signed on with SMS in the first place, the car would have been there in a day! They may cost a $100 or so more than the low quotes you'll get...but this is why. And such fantastic people--not just "nice" like all, but funny and extremely fast and knowledgeable--I will only ever use SMS in the future should the need arise. Highly, highly, highly recommend...from the guy in Delaware, the land of the forgotten except when SMS is involved!! Use them!!
