Moving a car across the country for the first time was scary at first. Websites gave different ratings that were all over the place for the each company, and the BBB ratings conflicted with some of them. Then there were the horror stories. Yikes!
We learned that a broker is who you place the order with, and they contract the 'load' to drivers who are making the run, which establishes the final price. The big complaints we heard about concerned 'surprise' costs to get a vehicle delivered, or that there were delays.
After interviewing several companies via phone, not just emails, it gave us more to go on than just price. And Montway didn't disappoint. They listened to our delivery 'time of day' window requirements, and we listened to them about the variables in delivery time that can happen.
In the end, we got the vehicle as planned, when planned. But if you're going to move a car, you can benefit by realizing:
- You need to be clear in your instructions, and ask for them to confirm what your instructions are via return email, so there's no misunderstanding.
- You need to answer your phone. If they are trying to reach you to confirm things and you don't pick up, you might miss a call, and since the broker's office might be in a different time zone than yours, don't expect someone to answer the phone 24-7.
- You need to be flexible with your timing. This is not FedEx or Starbucks your ordering. Get over it. Traffic jams, hailstorms in the midwest, and road construction detours happen, so don't be angry if they say it could be a 4-5 hour window.
- Be realistic about where you are meeting the truck with your auto on it. You live on a tree-lined one way residential street in Boston, and you want the car unloaded in front of your house? Come on. This is Big-Rig 18-wheeler. Even if you think it would physically make it on your street, the law may not allow the vehicle weight (DC doesn't take to large freight trucks going through town. After the Oklahoma City bombing using a truck bomb, can you blame them?). We found a big parking lot at a freeway-close shopping center in Virginia, and everyone was happy, and on time. By the way, I am NOT being paid or given an incentive for the ratings I'm giving. If they were crappy at something, I'd say so.
