I used Auto Zipper of Redondo Beach, CA, to transport one of my cars from Fresno to Orange County, CA. I first sought bids via an internet search which resulted in over 20 responses. Three of the firms contacted me by phone within 30 minutes, and most of the others sent e-mail quotes.

Auto Zipper's quote wasn't the lowest quote I received, but their quote was less than half of a number of quotes provided by others. I went with AZ based on the good reviews I read at this site. Their $320 all-inclusive fee seemed more than reasonable - roughly one dollar per mile.

Like most auto transporters, they gave me a window when they could ship my car. I contacted them on a Friday, and they said that they would try to arrange shipment by the following Weds or Thursday. The transport driver they prefer to use was contracted to pick up my car the following Weds or Thurs (ie: 5 - 6 days after my initial contact with AZ), but he got stuck in LA and became unavailable for those dates, so they called late on Tuesday and asked if my preference was to wait for him or to find a different carrier. I went for the second option, and they called back in a few hours to say that they had secured a transport who could pick the car up and have it to my place by Monday. I agreed with this strategy which cost me nothing extra to accept.

From there, AZ did the rest. They contacted my friends who were keeping my car at their home in Fresno and arranged for a pick-up. Brian at AZ called to say the car would be delivered by Monday morning at the latest. I got a call on late Sunday morning from my transport driver who informed me that he had just loaded my car and would be delivering it that night! True to form, my car arrived at 10:30 pm that evening. I should also mention that my driver was great - he took care to be as quiet as possible while setting the ramps to back my car off the flat truck, and even spoke in whispers as not to disturb the neighbors.

So, from the time I first contacted AZ to when my car arrived was roughly 9 days. Not at all bad when most transporters give you a 30-day window for delivery.

The only suggestion I would give to AZ is that they contact people by phone who ask for online bids as do a number of other companies. Their getting my business was pure luck, for if I hadn't taken the initiative to call them, someone else would have got the job. Of course, it could well be that those other guys pay for phone operators to make calls by charging more for the basic service of transporting your car! If that's the case, then I'd say AZ has a decent business model that worked very well for me.
