1Well I am glad I do not have to do this often, moving cars with transports. Not really understanding how all this work, it ended up costing over $800 more than I was originally quoted.. My lack of knowledge of how brokers worked, made my experience not a thankful one. Originally, I was quoted $3170.00 to move 3 cars from Fresno to Nashville. In trying to time everything the best I could, I was l left with dealing with additional costs to move my cars in a timely matter. After arriving in Tennessee, I was on the phone with Amerifrieght discussing how it was going to cost over $1200.00 more than was quoted. When asking why this is so, I was told that the original number was based on past value of moving cars. Actual costs could not be determined until they found a trucker willing to move the cars at their rates. So in other words... This no more than just a budget, not an actual cost. So now that I am in Tennessee, I am sitting here trying to negotiate the cost of moving my cars, when I thought I had done it already. I needed my cars, since I was renting cars here in Nashville. Lecia of Amerifreight told me we could wait longer to see if any other truckers would come and offer prices closer to what I was quoted, but they could not guarantee how soon that would be. Lecia was able to get the independent trucker to lower his original quote down to $800.00 and he would be able to pick up cars the next day. Once I made the commitment to move the cars, the independent trucker was the bright spot of my experience. He was timely and made great effort to keep us up to date on his expected delivery of the cars. I have to admit, Titan Haulers out of Nashville, TN was a delight to do business with. He even arrived a earlier than he expected and decided to drop off my cars at the final destination, even though he knew I would be there to take receipt of the car. He did this because he would not be able to deliver them the next morning because of DOT regulations. This allowed me to turn in my rental cars a little sooner.
So what did I learn from this and would I do it again? Well, if I couldn't get an independent trucker directly to move my cars, I would understand what a broker's pricing is really is. Understanding that their price can fluctuate and when you are trying to budget, make sure to add some contingency costs. Yes, you could get a cheaper price, but not at the timing you need or want. Take the time have them tell you what there cost really is. Ask questions and do research. As for using Amerifrieght again, I would, now that I know what to expect.
